* fix: suppress console windows for git subprocess calls on Windows
On Windows, every git.exe spawned by the WebUI (update checks,
version detection, workspace git info, rollback inspection,
worktree management) creates a visible console window. When
Windows Terminal is the default terminal, each short-lived git
process opens a new tab. Combined with the 60-second version-skew
monitor polling /api/settings and the boot-time update check, this
produces a flood of flashing terminal tabs.
Root cause: subprocess.run() calls in api/updates.py, api/rollback.py,
api/worktrees.py, and api/workspace.py did not pass
creationflags=CREATE_NO_WINDOW on Windows. api/workspace_git.py
already had the fix (#5692); these four files were missed.
Backend fix:
- Add _windows_hide_flags() helper to each affected module
(mirrors the existing pattern in api/workspace_git.py)
- Pass creationflags=_windows_hide_flags() to all git
subprocess.run() calls (10 call sites across 4 files)
Frontend fix (prevent timeout->retry cascades):
- Increase update-check timeout from 30s/60s to 300s (5 min)
- Increase /api/settings fetches from 30s to 60s
- Increase /api/git-info fetch from 30s to 60s
The backend git fetch to GitHub can take 15s per repo; with both
WebUI and Agent repos checked sequentially plus other git calls,
the total easily exceeds the old 30s default frontend timeout,
triggering the api() wrapper auto-retry (3 attempts) and
amplifying the git process flood.

_syncSidebarAria set aria-expanded on the newly-active rail button without
unsetting the previous one, so chat -> kanban -> skills left three buttons all
claiming aria-expanded=true. A screen reader announced three open disclosures
when only one panel owns the sidebar.
Reset every rail button that carries the attribute before setting the active
one.
* fix(settings): honor persisted auto-follow across boot failures and partial bodies (#6819)
The Auto-follow new content toggle was silently re-enabled by two paths:
- boot.js settings-fetch-failure fallback hardcoded _autoScrollFollow=true,
clobbering an explicit OFF for the whole session (post-turn scroll yanks
until refresh);
- _applySavedSettingsUi assigned body.auto_scroll_follow!==false
unconditionally, so a partial settings body without the key evaluated
undefined!==false -> true.
Fix: mirror the resolved value into profile-namespaced localStorage
(JSON map keyed by active profile), make the boot fallback read the mirror
instead of hardcoding ON, and only override the runtime flag when a settings
body actually owns the key. Fresh users (no mirror) still default to ON.
Tests: update test_issue4006 fallback assertion; add
test_issue6819_auto_scroll_follow_persistence covering source-shape guards
and extracted-helper behavior (fresh default, persisted OFF, profile
isolation, partial-body no-clobber, save-path persist).
* fix(settings): resolve auto-follow mirror profile from cookie before S.activeProfile init (#6856 review)
P1 (greptile-apps review): the profile-namespaced mirror was keyed by
S.activeProfile, but the boot settings-fetch-failure fallback runs before
boot resolves S.activeProfile, so a non-default profile with a failed fetch
read the 'default' mirror entry. Resolve the key from the hermes_profile
cookie (set per-client by /api/profile/switch, readable synchronously at
page load) first, falling back to S.activeProfile, then 'default'.
P2: document the persistence contract in the helper block (storage shape,
profile-key resolution order, read semantics, upgrade path).
Tests: extend the extracted-helper node test with the P1 scenario (cookie
authoritative over stale S.activeProfile, per-profile isolation via cookie,
no-cookie fallback) and add source-shape guards for the cookie read.
* fix(settings): defer auto-follow mirror read until profile resolves (P1 follow-up)
greptile-apps review: the hermes_profile cookie is HttpOnly — document.cookie
can never read it, so the cookie-based profile key from 39fed70b always fell
back to 'default', re-introducing the wrong-namespace bug for non-default
profiles on a failed settings fetch.
Correct model: the active profile is only known asynchronously via
/api/profile/active. The boot settings-fetch-failure path now sets a safe
default (ON) plus a deferred-reapply flag; once S.activeProfile resolves,
the mirror is read with the profile-correct namespace and the flag clears.
The success path (which already applied+persisted the authoritative value)
never touches the flag.
Tests updated to the deferred model: source-shape guard asserts the re-apply
runs AFTER profile resolution (fallback < profile-resolve < reapply ordering),
no document.cookie read in the profile key, and the node behavioral test
simulates boot-failure -> profile-resolve -> deferred re-apply.
* fix(settings): defer auto-follow mirror write until profile resolves (P1 round 3)
greptile-apps review: the SUCCESS boot path called _persistAutoScrollFollow
before S.activeProfile initialized, so a non-default profile's successful
settings fetch stored its value in the 'default' namespace. A later
failed-fetch boot would then find no entry for the real profile and restore
auto-follow ON.
The success path now defers the mirror write the same way the failure path
defers its read: it records the value in _autoScrollFollowDeferredPersist,
and the post-profile-resolution block persists it under the correct
namespace (then clears the flag). Both deferred branches now run together
after S.activeProfile resolves.
Tests: success path must not call _persistAutoScrollFollow before profile
resolution (source-shape), deferred-persist anchor ordered after profile
resolve, and the node behavioral test covers success-boot -> profile-resolve
-> deferred write under the resolved profile (and NOT under default).
* fix(settings): make auto-follow mirror global to match the backend contract (maintainer review)
Maintainer review on #6856: the mirror was profile-keyed, but the backend
authority is GLOBAL — SETTINGS_FILE = STATE_DIR / 'settings.json'
(api/config.py), and /api/settings calls load_settings() with no
profile-specific file. A profile-keyed map leaves a freshly-opened profile
with no mirror entry, so a failed settings fetch on that profile wrongly
restored ON despite the global OFF — the original failure stayed
reproducible.
Revert to a single global last-known value ('1'/'0' under one key):
- _persistAutoScrollFollow / _readPersistedAutoScrollFollow now use a
plain scalar, not a JSON profile map.
- Boot success path persists synchronously (no deferred write — the global
mirror has no profile dimension).
- Boot failure fallback reads synchronously (no deferred re-apply — no
profile resolution needed).
- Remove _autoScrollFollowProfileKey, _autoScrollFollowDeferredPersist,
_autoScrollFollowDeferredReapply entirely.
Tests: behavioral node test now asserts the maintainer-requested regression
(global OFF survives profile change + failed fetch, single scalar storage);
source-shape guards assert the profile map and deferred machinery are gone;
boot success persists; partial-body and save-path assertions unchanged.
14/14 pass.
* fix(settings): never persist synthesized auto-follow from a failed autosave (Greptile P1)
Greptile review on #6856: in _autosaveAppearanceSettings, when the POST
fails (saved is falsy), '!saved' synthesizes _autoScrollFollow=true, and
the added persist call wrote that synthesized ON into the mirror. A later
boot settings-fetch failure would then restore ON from the corrupted
mirror, reintroducing post-turn scroll yanks for a user who explicitly
disabled auto-follow.
Persist ONLY from an explicit boolean in the server response:
if(saved && typeof saved.auto_scroll_follow==='boolean' && typeof _persistAutoScrollFollow==='function'){
_persistAutoScrollFollow(saved.auto_scroll_follow);
}
A failed save or a partial response without the key leaves the mirror
untouched (last authoritative value preserved).
Tests: source-shape guard asserts the explicit-boolean requirement; the
node behavioral test replicates the failed-autosave path (mirror stays
OFF) and the successful-autosave path (explicit boolean persists).
* fix(settings): sync auto-follow mirror on successful settings-panel GET
Gate review (Codex) found a stale-mirror gap in #6856's own contract: a
successful loadSettingsPanel() GET applied the authoritative auto_scroll_follow
value to window._autoScrollFollow but did not persist the global mirror, so an
explicit OFF applied via the panel left a stale ON mirror that a later
boot-fetch failure would restore (reopening #6819). Persist from the panel GET
too, only when the server sent an explicit boolean (never a synthesized
default) — matching the boot + autosave contract. Adds a bite-tested regression.

Add an opt-in setting to hide Transparent Stream's per-event timestamp chips while keeping the response footer time visible, for users who found the per-event chips noisy. Thanks @rodboev. Closes#6099.
* feat(core): add registerHermesSessionOpenHandler + renderTranscript extension hooks
- registerHermesSessionOpenHandler(fn): register a handler that fires on
session open. Return {cancel:true} to prevent navigation.
- renderTranscript(container, messages, opts): render messages into any
DOM container using core's renderMd pipeline. Skip tool messages.
- Wire _hermesNotifySessionOpen into loadSession: pre-load guard at top,
post-load notification at end for extensions to hook into.
- Follows existing registerHermesTtsEngine extension registration pattern.
This gives extensions like chat-tiling a sanctioned API instead of DOM
hacking to intercept and render session transcripts.
* fix: address 3 gate-fail blockers from PR #5508 review
Fixes the three core issues identified by nesquena-hermes code review:
1. XSS sink in renderTranscript (boot.js)
- Fallback to textContent when window.renderMd is unavailable
- innerHTML exclusively for successful renderMd output
2. Stale _loadingSessionId reset in cancel branch (sessions.js)
- Remove premature nulling of _loadingSessionId
- Cancel path simply returns without touching loading-guard state
3. Pre-open veto bypasses profile/import side-effects (sessions.js)
- Move cancellable preload hook to start of _openSidebarSession,
before external session import and profile switching
- Pass internal _preloadNotified flag to skip duplicate preload
in loadSession while retaining post-load notification
Closes#5508 gate-fail items.
* fix: use module-level flag instead of call argument to avoid test regression
The _preloadNotified approach broke test_static_sessions_js_switches_profile
before_opening_all_profiles_row because it changed the loadSession call
signature from loadSession(sid, loadOpts) to loadSession(sid, Object.assign(...)).
Switch to a module-scoped boolean _hermesSessionOpenAlreadyFired set by
_openSidebarSession before calling loadSession, checked by loadSession's
pre-hook guard. The call signature stays unchanged.
Test 2 (test_load_session_rearms_stream_on_every_early_return) also passes.
* fix: compact pre-hook comment to keep loadSession within test window limits
* fix: replace global _hermesSessionOpenAlreadyFired flag with per-call opts._preloadNotified
The module-level boolean introduced in 381fa0ef had two problems:
1. ReferenceError on direct loadSession() calls — the flag was undeclared
when called outside _openSidebarSession, breaking saved-session restore.
2. Never reset after first sidebar open — all subsequent direct calls
silently skipped the cancellable preload handler.
Per the maintainer's review (PR #5508), replace the global with a per-call
option _preloadNotified passed by _openSidebarSession via Object.assign.
This keeps the call signature stable for existing tests and eliminates
the stale global state leak.
Test adjustments:
- test_issue1611: widened loadSession call literal assertion
- test_session_channel_option_x: body slice 14000→15000 to accommodate
the slightly longer function body
* chore: remove unrelated files from commit
* fix: address 3 review issues — preload-only cancel, drop inner wrapper, pass _preloadNotified on retry
- Only honor {cancel:true} when opts.preload===true (boot.js)
- Drop .msg-body-inner wrapper, render directly into .msg-body (boot.js)
- Carry _preloadNotified:true through cross-profile 409 retry (sessions.js)

* Update static/boot.js

* fix(extensions): resolve canonical sid before preload hook + pass _preloadNotified on continuation retry
PR #5508 review follow-up (review 4690636760):
1. Move _resolveSessionIdFromSidebarLineage() before the preload hook so
extensions always see the canonical sid, not the raw sidebar click id.
2. Pass _preloadNotified:true on the continuation-session retry path to
prevent duplicate preload events to extensions.
3. Add functional test_extension_session_hooks.py — actually drives the
new hook registration, preload-veto, transcript rendering, and
_preloadNotified bridge in Node (13 tests, all green).
* Remove unused pytest import
Removed unused import of pytest from test file.
* fix: address 2 gate-blocking veto-ordering defects (PR #5508)
Blocker 1 (CORE): cross-profile retry now passes _preloadNotified:true
so the pre-hook doesn't re-fire after destructive side-effects already
ran (stream teardown, message clear, profile switch). A {cancel:true}
on that second fire was stranding the UI profile-switched with a
cleared transcript.
Blocker 2 (SILENT): closeMobileSidebar() was called synchronously
BEFORE _openSidebarSession()'s veto guard in three places (tap-to-open,
child-session, lineage-segment). A {cancel:true} still closed the
sidebar out from under it. Removed the three premature calls; moved
a single closeMobileSidebar() inside _openSidebarSession AFTER the
veto guard so it only runs when the open actually proceeds.
Added 3 regression tests asserting {cancel:true} leaves NO side-effect.

/api/session/new treated an absent 'worktree' key as false, so the
agent's config-level 'worktree: true' default was never consulted for
WebUI sessions even though the WebUI reuses the agent's own worktree
helper. Both callers should agree on same-agent/same-repo isolation.
Three-value model:
- body 'worktree' absent -> agent config default applies (profile-aware
via get_config_for_profile_home, so a user with worktree:true in one
profile but not another gets per-profile behavior)
- explicit true/false -> honored verbatim; explicit always wins
Non-git workspaces: a config-default request degrades to a plain
session and surfaces 'worktree_skipped' in the payload; an explicit
worktree:true keeps the hard 400.
Frontend (same change, load-bearing): newSession() forwards explicit
true/false and omits the key otherwise; the boot-time auto-bind
(_maybeBindFreshDefaultWorkspaceSession) and the onboarding session
send worktree:false explicitly so a config default can never mint a
worktree + branch from merely opening the UI. Deliberate 'New Chat'
sends nothing and inherits the default.
Tests: route matrix (config on/off x body absent/true/false), non-git
fallback vs explicit 400, explicit-false-beats-config-true, config
helper (ambient/named-profile/fail-soft), static UI assertions that
auto-bind and onboarding opt out and New Chat paths don't pin a value.
Fixes#6022
The Cmd/Ctrl+/ predicate keyed off e.code==='Slash' + !e.shiftKey, which on
QWERTZ layouts (a) stole Ctrl/Cmd+- browser zoom-out (physical Slash there is
the minus/zoom key) and (b) missed the real shifted-'/' chord. Match e.key==='/'
instead — layout-correct on every keyboard. Tests updated to assert the physical
code isn't used and a layout-shifted '/' still matches.

* fix(dictation): preserve composer text when server STT commits
Dictation via the server STT path (MediaRecorder → POST /api/transcribe)
replaced any text already in the composer with the recognized transcript.
Browser SpeechRecognition worked correctly; only the async path was broken.
Root cause: the MediaRecorder.onstop handler calls _setRecording(false)
before awaiting _transcribeBlob's fetch. _setRecording(false) clears the
module-level _prefix. By the time the fetch resolves and _commitTranscript
runs, _prefix is '' — so the existing append logic collapses to
'just the transcript' and overwrites the textarea.
Browser SR dodged this because sr.onend builds the merged string into a
local variable before invoking _setRecording(false). Server STT is async
and could not use that pattern without help.
Fix:
- _commitTranscript accepts an optional prefixOverride parameter.
- _transcribeBlob snapshots _prefix into a local before the await.
- Pass the snapshot through to _commitTranscript.
Add a Settings → Voice → 'Append dictation to composer' toggle (default
ON) so users can opt into replace mode if they prefer the old buggy
behavior. The bug fix changes the default to append, matching what the
browser SR path always did.
i18n: new keys dictation_append_label / dictation_append_desc added to
all 14 locale blocks in static/i18n.js (English fallback where no native
translation exists).
Files: static/boot.js (+43/-7), static/index.html (+7), static/i18n.js (+30).
* fix(dictation): snapshot _prefix in onstop, not inside _transcribeBlob
First attempt at the append-mode fix took the snapshot inside
_transcribeBlob via 'const prefixSnapshot = _prefix'. By the time
_transcribeBlob runs (awaited from recorder.onstop), the sync block
above has already called _setRecording(false), which clears _prefix
inside _setRecording's !on branch. So the snapshot was always '' and
the append path fell through to the replace branch.
Move the snapshot into recorder.onstop, before _setRecording(false)
runs. Pass it as a parameter into _transcribeBlob so the call site
doesn't need to re-read the (now-cleared) module-level _prefix.
No behavior change for the browser-SR path — sr.onend still builds
the merged string into a local variable before invoking
_setRecording(false), and was already correct.
* fix(dictation): trim comments to fit test_590_recording_stops_before_transcribe
test_bugbatch_apr2026.py::test_590_recording_stops_before_transcribe slices
700 chars from 'recorder.onstop' and asserts that _setRecording(false)
comes before _sendRawAudio(/_transcribeBlob( inside that window. With
the verbose 6-line comment block from the previous fix, the actual
call sites landed at offsets 834/890 — past the 700-char window — so
the test's .find() returned -1 and the assertion failed mechanically.
Also: the verbose comment in _transcribeBlob contained the substring
'recorder.onstop', which made the test's first .find() land in the
comment instead of the actual handler, returning a wrong onstop_start.
Trim both comment blocks to single lines that fit within the test's
window and don't contain the literal 'recorder.onstop' substring.
Functional behavior unchanged from the previous fix; this is purely
a comment-shape adjustment to satisfy the brittle test.
* fix(tests): anchor test_590 on handler definition + widen window per review
The reviewer's fix-spec for test_590_recording_stops_before_transcribe
was more thorough than my single-shot comment trim:
(1) Reword the _transcribeBlob comment so it doesn't contain the
literal 'recorder.onstop' substring.
(2) Make the test robust to the handler growing: anchor on
'recorder.onstop=async' instead of 'recorder.onstop', and
widen the fixed 700-char window to 1200.
Applied both. With these changes the test passes regardless of how
much comment text gets added in or around the handler in the future.
Also restored the verbose explanatory comments in both locations
(the previous a7f84027 had trimmed them to fit the brittle 700-char
window — that workaround is no longer needed).
Backward-compat check: the new test logic also passes against
origin/master (verified locally), so this change doesn't regress
the existing green-master invariant.
* fix(dictation): preserve user's mid-transcription edits in async server STT
Greptile flagged this as a 4/5 concern on the append-mode branch:
the async server-STT path appended the dictated text to the stale
snapshot (`_prefix` captured at recording start), which clobbered
any keystrokes the user made during the ~1s transcription round-trip.
Before this fix, with append mode ON:
User typed before mic: 'Hello, '
User typed during STT: 'Hello, from K' (typed while waiting)
Dictated text: 'world'
Result: 'Hello, world' (lost 'from K')
After this fix:
User typed before mic: 'Hello, '
User typed during STT: 'Hello, from K'
Dictated text: 'world'
Result: 'Hello, from K world' (live state preserved)
The fix prefers live `ta.value` as the append base when the textarea
is non-empty, falling back to the `prefixOverride` snapshot only
when the textarea is genuinely empty (the original empty-composer path
where nothing to race with).
Adds a regression test in test_raw_audio_upload.py that asserts the
new `ta.value ||` fallback structure on `_commitTranscript`.
* fix(dictation): don't resurrect cleared text on async transcription resolve
Greptile P1 (re-reviewed at 20:07 UTC): the previous race fix
(`ta.value || (prefixOverride ?? _prefix)`) treats an empty
`ta.value` as falsy and falls back to the recording-start snapshot.
If the user explicitly clears the textarea while server transcription
is in flight, the cleared text reappears with the dictated text
appended — the user's intent is violated.
Fix: when prefixOverride IS passed (server-STT path), trust live
ta.value UNCONDITIONALLY — even when empty. The fallback to _prefix
only fires when no prefixOverride is given AND ta.value is empty,
which is purely defensive (no current caller hits this branch — the
browser-SR path commits inline in sr.onend without calling this
function).
Concrete repro:
User typed before mic: 'Hello, '
User clears textarea during STT
Dictated text: 'world'
OLD (0239bb4e) result: 'Hello, world' (cleared text resurrected)
NEW result: 'world' (user intent respected)
Greptile's suggested one-liner:
const base = prefixOverride !== undefined ? ta.value : (ta.value || _prefix);
Applied with expanded inline comment documenting the three concerns
this function balances (race, clear-during-STT, defensive fallback).

_micRestartCount bounds the continuity auto-restart loop (_micMaxRestarts=20)
so a stolen audio session can't spin tight. But it only reset on
fresh-start / terminal-end / error -- never on a real onresult. So a long
mobile dictation with 20 natural pauses (each producing speech) hit the cap
mid-session and the mic silently stopped, undercutting the feature's whole
purpose ("keep dictation active through pauses").
Reset _micRestartCount=0 in sr.onresult: a real result proves the restarts
are PRODUCTIVE, not a failure spin. The cap still guards the failure case --
consecutive restarts that yield no speech (onend with no intervening
onresult) keep incrementing and trip the bound.
Regression test seeds the count AT the cap, fires a productive onresult, and
asserts the ensuing pause still restarts (count reset to 0 -> 1). Verified
fail-without / pass-with against boot.js.
Salvage-rebuild of #5473 (@ruizanthony), reworked to OPT-IN per maintainer
decision. New default-OFF setting new_chat_on_workspace_switch: when enabled,
selecting a DIFFERENT workspace starts a fresh chat bound to that workspace
(leaving the current conversation on its original workspace, avoiding stale
cross-workspace context) instead of mutating the current session in place.
Same-workspace selection stays an in-place refresh. Default off preserves the
shipped behavior for everyone.
Wiring: config default + bool key; window._newChatOnWorkspaceSwitch set on
boot + autosave; Settings checkbox (Preferences); gated branch in
switchToWorkspace() that runs before the in-place /api/session/update; 3 i18n
keys across all 15 locales; regression tests (default-off, gated-branch-present,
flag-wiring, checkbox+i18n).

Rebased 363 commits forward (branch-point 2026-07-05). Applied the PR's code

vv.scale != 1 means the visual-viewport shrinkage reflects zoom, not the
keyboard; on Chromium 'force enable zoom' that produced a large spurious inset
that jittered on pan. Bail out of the inset when |vv.scale-1|>0.05. + test.
On touch-primary devices (iPad Safari) the on-screen keyboard shrinks the
visual viewport but not the layout viewport, so the bottom-pinned composer
sits behind the keyboard. Compute a --keyboard-bottom-inset from visualViewport

non-touch / no-visualViewport. Reuses the existing visualViewport + pageshow

The success branch had two adjacent calls:
if(typeof window._applyVoiceModePref==='function') window._applyVoiceModePref(); // pre-divider (the actual fix)
_applyComposerFooterVisibilitySettings();
if(typeof window._applyVoiceModePref==='function') window._applyVoiceModePref(); // post-divider (redundant)
The post-divider one ran after _applyComposerFooterVisibilitySettings,
so it couldn't affect the divider the PR was meant to fix. It looked
like a defensive double-tap, but the function is idempotent and the
pref source (localStorage) doesn't change between the two synchronous
calls — so it was just dead code that made the diff look bigger than
the actual semantic change.
Drop it. Net PR footprint is now strictly: 'use the window-qualified
name and apply once before divider recompute in both IIFE branches.'
Re-tested: 26/26 pass on test_issue4598_composer_control_visibility
+ test_issue1488_composer_voice_buttons.
Greptile P1: _applyVoiceModePref is declared with 'function' inside the
voice-mode IIFE (line 1205) and exported to window._applyVoiceModePref
at line 1212. The bare identifier _applyVoiceModePref is closure-local
and not visible from the settings-load IIFE branches at line 2997 and
line 3056 — so `typeof _applyVoiceModePref==='function'` was always
'undefined', the guard was permanently false, and the pre-divider call
silently never fired.
This undid the entire boot-order fix: divider was still computed
against the pre-sync #btnVoiceMode visibility, so the round-2 SILENT
race the PR was meant to close remained.
Fix: use window._applyVoiceModePref in both branches, matching the
already-correct call on line 2999 (which worked only by accident —
it ran AFTER _applyComposerFooterVisibilitySettings so it had no
effect on the bug, but at least it ran).
Tests: pytest tests/test_issue4598_composer_control_visibility.py
tests/test_issue1488_composer_voice_buttons.py — 26/26 pass.

re-encoded the previous login URL one level deeper — growing the URL exponentially
until the browser's length limit broke the tab. All guards now collapse/reject a
`next` whose decoded leading PATH resolves to the login route (bounded
percent-decoding up to 8 levels, fail-closed at the cap), while preserving the
existing open-redirect protections AND legitimate non-login paths that merely
carry their own `next=` query key. Length cap as belt-and-suspenders.
Self-built (nesquena-hermes); nesquena independent review APPROVED. Gate (Codex)
found + fixed an over-broad nested-next reject (regressed next-carrying paths) and
a deep-encode decode off-by-one; both root-fixed, login guards verified clean.
Fable senior review (COMMENT, no blockers) + DRY nit:
- Widen the ResizeObserver from #msg to the whole #composerWrap so growth from the
attachment tray / selection chips (not just textarea rows) also re-pins a bottom-
pinned reader. Fable flagged tray/chip growth as a likely REMAINING #5515 trigger
— same viewport-shrink physics, now covered by the same guarded re-pin at one seam.
#composerWrap contains #msg, so the textarea path is still covered.
- DRY: _repinMessagesAfterComposerResize() now reuses _messageBottomDistance()
instead of re-implementing the bottom-distance expression inline.
Re-verified live (composer grow -> bottomDist stays 0) + 524 scroll/composer
regression tests green + 6 issue tests green.
#5514 (deterministic): with the chat pinned to the bottom, growing the composer
past one row (multi-line typing, Shift+Enter, a multi-line / WisprFlow paste)
shrinks the flex:1 .messages viewport by the same delta. scrollTop is unchanged
but max-scrollTop rose by delta, so the reader is stranded delta-px above the
bottom — the transcript 'scrolls up one row per composer row.' autoResize()
resized the textarea and called updateSendBtn() but never re-pinned the transcript.
Reproduced live: composer 176px -> viewport shrank 745->613 -> transcript stranded
132px above bottom while _scrollPinned stayed true.
#5515 (intermittent 'random scroll up'): the same viewport-shrink from composer
growth via paths that don't route through input->autoResize (paste, draft restore,
programmatic value set, reflow) reads to the user as a random upward jump. Covered
by a ResizeObserver seam (below).
Fix: new _repinMessagesAfterComposerResize() (static/ui.js) re-pins to the bottom
ONLY when the reader is genuinely still pinned (honors _messageUserUnpinned /
_scrollPinned — never yanks a reader who scrolled away; verified live). Called from:
(a) autoResize() after the height write, and
(b) a ResizeObserver on the #msg textarea that re-pins on GROW only, catching
every composer height-change path (not just the typed-input seam).
Verified live on a 40-message seeded session: pinned reader stays at bottomDist=0
after a 4-line composer grow; an unpinned (scrolled-up) reader is NOT moved.
Tests: tests/test_issue5514_composer_grow_scroll_pin.py (3 static wiring + 3 node-vm
behavioral). 524 scroll/composer regression tests across 39 files still green.
NOTE on #5515: this resolves the composer-growth cause (which the reporter's
WisprFlow-paste symptom points at). If a purely non-composer intermittent jump
persists, the remaining suspect is touch-device overflow-anchor:auto on content-
above height change — that path has no repro yet and is tracked as needinfo on
#5515.
After a runtime locale change (setLocale from Settings), the cached
recognition object retains its boot-time lang, causing dictation to
run in the wrong language. Set lang immediately before .start() at
the plain dictation path in _startMicCapture, matching the pattern
already used in _ensureSpeechRecognition().
Closes#5483
Rebase PR #5162 (rename busy_input_mode -> default_message_mode; flip the
default from 'queue' to 'steer') onto current origin/master WITHOUT dropping
the shipped #5170 localStorage persistence mirror.
Rename the mirror machinery to the new setting name for consistency:
_BUSY_INPUT_MODES -> _DEFAULT_MESSAGE_MODES (values unchanged)
_normalizeBusyInputMode -> _normalizeDefaultMessageMode (fallback now 'steer')
_persistBusyInputMode -> _persistDefaultMessageMode
_readPersistedBusyInputMode -> _readPersistedDefaultMessageMode
window._busyInputMode -> window._defaultMessageMode (+ renamed exports)
localStorage: write the new 'hermes-default-message-mode' key; read it with a
fallback to the legacy 'hermes-busy-input-mode' key so an existing user's
persisted preference survives the rename.
Preserve #5170 behavior at every mirror site under the new names:
- boot success -> window._defaultMessageMode=_persistDefaultMessageMode(...)
- boot FAILURE -> window._defaultMessageMode=_readPersistedDefaultMessageMode()
(NOT a hardcoded 'steer' — a saved 'interrupt'/'queue' must still apply when
the server is unreachable; do not regress #5167/#5132)
- preferences autosave, settings-panel load, and _applySavedSettingsUi all
persist through _persistDefaultMessageMode(...)
Tests updated for the rename while keeping the persistence-behavior assertions
(test_1062, test_5145, test_5167); test_5167 gains explicit guards that the
load-failure path reads the persisted pref and never hardcodes a literal mode,
plus autosave/panel-load mirror-write coverage.

Follow-up to v0.51.819 which removed the export button from the composer footer
(it tripped the footer overflow-collapse, hiding model/workspace labels). Per
design consult (Fable) + ChatGPT/Open-WebUI convention, export now lives in the
per-conversation sidebar three-dot action menu, right after Duplicate:
- exportSessionHTML(session) parameterized (was active-session-only); Settings
button now wired ()=>exportSessionHTML() and still exports the active session
- new _appendSessionExportHtmlAction() added after Duplicate + in the read-only
early-return branch (export is non-mutating; imported sessions re-exportable)
- exports THAT row's conversation, not just the active one
- download icon added to ICONS; session_export_html[_desc] added to 14 locales
- Settings HTML button retained as secondary data-management entry
The #4968 export button was hard-inserted into the composer footer .composer-left
row, bypassing the configurable composer-control framework. On desktop it pushed the
footer over its overflow threshold, tripping _fitComposerFooter into cf-icons mode
which HIDES the model/workspace/profile text labels. Removing it restores label
visibility. Export stays available via the settings-panel HTML button (#btnExportHTML).
