n bee7b8a9e4 fix(state-sync): repoint to renamed agent SessionDB API + fix agent-coupled tests
The Hermes Agent's state-module refactor (agent commit 53db597201, released
v2026.9.7) renamed SessionDB.set_auto_title_if_empty -> set_auto_title(
session_id, title, *, source) and (agent commit 14791b4d4e) dropped the
tools.approval._ApprovalEntry back-compat facade (class moved, unchanged, to
tools.approval_gateway_wait).

Production impact (real, silent): api.state_sync.sync_session_title called the
removed set_auto_title_if_empty, whose AttributeError was swallowed by the
surrounding `except Exception: logger.debug(...)`, so WebUI auto-generated
session titles stopped persisting to state.db on agent >= v2026.9.7 — hermes
sessions list went blank again (the exact #6892 regression). Now calls
set_auto_title with LLM provenance, which preserves the identical semantics
(only fills NULL/lower-authority title, returns False untouched on a manual
rename, ValueError -> get_next_title_in_lineage #N de-dup).

Test fixes (agent-coupled; skip on GitHub CI which installs no agent, so they
only surface on an agent-equipped box like our gate):
 1. tools.approval._ApprovalEntry -> idempotent autouse conftest compat shim
backfilling the class from its post-split location only when the installed
agent lacks the dropped facade. No production code imports it.
 2. test_goal_command_webui::test_profile_goal_falls_back_when_session_db_path_is_frozen
was missing the monkeypatch.syspath_prepend(...) that every sibling test in
the file has, so its bare `import hermes_state` failed under full-suite
ordering after a predecessor stripped the agent dir from sys.path. Added it.

Verified: authoritative 5-shard CI-equivalent split all green (0 failed);
each failure proven pre-existing on clean master (not this diff).

nesquena-hermesandnesquena-hermes 1dd5cc43ce fix(tests): isolate model-selection env vars so the suite passes on any runner (#6395)
The suite failed 6 tests (test_sprint12 default-model, test_issue1538 Nous
catalog, test_issue1567 picker capacity/symmetry) whenever it ran on a box that
exports HERMES_MODEL (e.g. inside a live Hermes agent session where HERMES_MODEL
is the agent's runtime model). Root cause: get_effective_default_model() in
api/config.py treats HERMES_MODEL / OPENAI_MODEL / LLM_MODEL as the
highest-priority default-model source — above the isolated test config — so a
runner-exported value overrode the sandbox config and polluted the model
picker/catalog (e.g. injecting "opus-4.8" and breaking the @nous: prefix
invariant / default-model readback).

Fix: scrub the three model-selection env vars at conftest module level (before
any product module imports, covering in-process tests) and again in the
out-of-process test_server subprocess env, and add them to the per-test
_scrub_provider_env helpers in the two Nous test modules. The isolated config /
HERMES_WEBUI_DEFAULT_MODEL is now authoritative regardless of the runner env.

Verified: with HERMES_MODEL=opus-4.8 set, the full suite goes from 6 failed to
0 failed (13550 passed); non-vacuity confirmed (disabling the scrub reproduces
the failures).

Rod Boev 704e19adfe fix(#6240): fall back when test skills symlink is unavailable (#6276)
Fall back to a copytree (with read-only handling) when the test-server fixture can't create the skills symlink on native Windows without SeCreateSymbolicLinkPrivilege (WinError 1314). Test-infra only. Thanks @rodboev. Closes #6240.

nesquena-hermes 4c9690bf59 fix(#5588): reset memoized password-hash cache around every test (isolation flake)
tests/test_issue803.py::TestProfileCookieHelpers failed when run after
tests/test_session_static_assets.py (passed in isolation). Root cause:
api.auth.get_password_hash() memoizes the resolved hash process-wide
(_AUTH_HASH_CACHE / _AUTH_HASH_COMPUTED) and is NOT keyed on the
HERMES_WEBUI_PASSWORD env var. test_session_static_auth_exemption sets that env
var + populates the cache; monkeypatch pops the env on teardown but the cache
stays populated, so is_auth_enabled() reads stale True and build_profile_cookie
raises "requires a request handler when auth is enabled".

Fix: an autouse conftest fixture (_reset_password_hash_cache) that invalidates the
cache before AND after every test — matching the existing _isolate_hermes_config_path
/ _restore_profile_home_globals autouse-reset convention. Fixes the whole class
regardless of which test sets the password; no-op when auth is off. Adds a
direct regression test (cache a password, pop env, assert auth reads disabled +
build_profile_cookie doesn't raise). Paired-run repro now passes.

nesquena-hermes 6b2ac55b8d stage #4566 + stamp v0.51.546 — fix flaky gateway_sync test (#4557)
rodboev: settings-write-version counter widens the session-list cache key + flush CLI-sessions
cache on visibility toggle, killing the mtime_ns-bucket collision flake. Co-authored-by: rodboev <rodboev@users.noreply.github.com>

nesquena-hermes f8d5ad2b1e fix(sessions): commit-reliable state.db content fingerprint in cache keys (real flake root cause)
Codex root-cause consult confirmed: the CLI-session cache (_CLI_SESSIONS_CACHE,
5s TTL) and session-list cache were keyed on (st_mtime_ns, st_size) of state.db
+ WAL sidecars. Under WAL-mode writes those stamps collide (same mtime-ns bucket
+ WAL frame size after checkpoint), serving a stale cache -> freshly-committed
gateway/CLI session intermittently absent from /api/sessions (the recurring
test_gateway_sync flake AND a real up-to-5s sidebar delay for gateway writes).

PRAGMA data_version is NOT usable here (fresh per-request connection always
reports its own initial value, never advances — verified). Fix = a cheap
content fingerprint (COUNT/MAX(rowid) over sessions+messages) read on a fresh
connection, which DOES advance on every commit and is immune to mtime
granularity. Wired into _sqlite_file_stat_cache_key (models) + the routes-layer
source stamp. + 3 regression tests + corrected the earlier false root-cause
comments.

nesquena-hermes 7c21fe4a93 fix(sessions): invalidate session-list cache on CLI-visibility toggle + de-flake node test timeouts
ROOT FIX (product bug): POST /api/settings never invalidated the session-list
cache, so toggling show_cli_sessions/show_cron_sessions could serve a stale
sidebar for up to the cache TTL when the settings-file mtime stamp collided with
a cached entry. The handler now clears the cache directly on those toggles. This
is also the root cause of the recurring test_gateway_sync CI flake (session
absent from /api/sessions right after the visibility toggle).

DEFENSE-IN-DEPTH: cleanup_test_sessions fixture now resets show_cli_sessions to
default BEFORE each test too, not only in teardown.

FLAKE FIX (test infra): bump 31 node-subprocess correctness-harness timeouts from
10s -> 30s across 23 test files. Node spawn + V8 warmup under parallel CI shard
load can exceed 10s, causing TimeoutExpired flakes (e.g. test_1325 on #4445).
Only real node subprocess.run() sites changed — mock signatures, HTTP urlopen,
and deliberate timeout-behavior tests (test_api_timeout, timeout=0/1/2) untouched.

nesquena-hermes 1c3b1ecdc9 test(gateway_sync): fix intermittent StopIteration flake (test-isolation root cause)
The A3 flake (test_sessions_response_backfills_imported_messaging_source_metadata
failing with StopIteration on a sharded CI run while passing in isolation +
sequentially) had two compounding causes, both fixed:

1. ROOT CAUSE — show_cli_sessions setting leak across shard-ordered tests.
33 gateway_sync tests flip show_cli_sessions=True but only ~30 reset it,
   and cleanup_test_sessions didn't reset it. Under pytest-shard ordering a
test could run with the setting in an unexpected state, so its session was
occasionally absent from /api/sessions. cleanup_test_sessions now resets
show_cli_sessions to its default (off) after every test, the same way it
   already resets last_workspace.

2. SYMPTOM — bare next(generator) with no default raised an opaque
StopIteration (read as a mystery flake) instead of a diagnosable failure
when the session was absent. The 5 bare next() call sites over /api/sessions
results now use next(..., None) + an explicit assertion naming the missing
session, so any future isolation regression fails clearly instead of
   masquerading as a flake.

No production code change; tests + fixture only.

nesquena-hermesandnesquena-hermes 796edf56d3 test-infra: per-process test port for true parallel-run safety (fixes the local ConnectionRefused cascade) (#4292)
* test-infra: per-process free port + port-keyed state dir (true parallel safety)

ROOT CAUSE of the cascade-under-concurrency: the test port was a fixed
md5(repo_path)%10000, so two concurrent pytest runs from the SAME worktree (e.g.
a dev's suite + a Codex/Opus gate running ./scripts/test.sh to verify) bound the
SAME port — and the session-fixture's _kill_port_owner(TEST_PORT) at setup reaped
the OTHER run's server mid-suite, cascading every HTTP test with ConnectionRefused.

FIX: when HERMES_WEBUI_TEST_PORT isn't pinned, _auto_test_port now grabs a FREE
OS-assigned ephemeral port per process (bind :0, read back, release). The state
dir name is keyed on that port too (webui-test-<repohash>-<port>), so concurrent
runs get fully distinct port + state dir + db — no shared resource, no mutual kill.

VERIFIED: two FULL suites run concurrently from the same worktree → BOTH
9150 passed / 0 failed, 0 ConnectionRefused, 0 dirs leaked into ~/.hermes. This is
the parallel-safe world: Codex + Opus gates + local suite can all run at once.

* test-infra: address Codex CORE findings on the per-process-port fix

1. Don't _kill_port_owner an AUTO (unpinned) port: fuser -k on an ephemeral-range
port can match a client socket or a concurrent run's process, killing the wrong
thing. Track TEST_PORT_PINNED; only reap pinned ports (which may be stale).
Auto ports are freshly confirmed-free, so nothing to reap.
2. Cap auto port at <=64535 so offset-deriving tests (test_server_port_exclusivity
adds up to +905 to TEST_PORT) can't overflow past 65535 (OverflowError).

nesquena-hermesandnesquena-hermes ee7fda019f test-infra: hard-isolate test state from production + resilient teardown (#4289)
* test-infra: hard-isolate test state from production + robust teardown

Two production-safety fixes to tests/conftest.py + tests/_pytest_port.py:

1. TEST_STATE_DIR now defaults under the OS temp dir (/tmp/hermes-webui-tests/)
instead of HERMES_HOME/webui-test-<hash> — which had been writing test state
INTO the real ~/.hermes/profiles/webui/ (144 leaked webui-test-* dirs found).
Added a hard-stop guard: refuse to run if the resolved test state dir is
inside the production Hermes home, so a misconfigured env can never let tests
   wipe/clobber production profiles/sessions/credentials.

2. _rmtree_retry is now resilient on Linux (was a bare shutil.rmtree): retries
transient OSError [Errno 39] Directory-not-empty races (a background daemon
writing into the tree during teardown) + a final ignore_errors sweep, and
warns instead of raising so a benign cleanup race can't spuriously ERROR a
test (the failure mode seen near #4283 context-reconciliation tests).

* test-infra: anchor production-proximity guard on literal ~/.hermes (not $HERMES_HOME)

The first guard compared TEST_STATE_DIR against $HERMES_HOME, which is overridden
to TEST_STATE_DIR itself during a run -> false-tripped collection (6 modules) with
'test dir X is inside production home X'. Now anchor on the literal user-home
~/.hermes and explicitly allow any dir under the OS temp root, so the temp default
never trips while a real ~/.hermes target still hard-stops.

* test-infra: close TMPDIR-under-~/.hermes guard hole (Codex)

Codex flagged: the 'temp is always allowed' exception could be exploited if
TMPDIR itself is set under ~/.hermes — then a 'temp' path is a production path and
_under_temp would wrongly suppress the guard. Now the temp exception only holds
when the temp root is itself OUTSIDE the production home. Verified: normal /tmp
default allowed; TMPDIR=~/.hermes/tmp now trips the guard.

* test-infra: mirror production-proximity guard into _pytest_port.py (Opus defense-in-depth)

* test-infra: remove ~/.hermes production-path fallbacks from 4 test files (Codex)

Codex's kickback found the real gap: test_sprint5, test_sprint45,
test_onboarding_existing_config, test_regressions each hardcoded a
~/.hermes/webui-mvp-test fallback for their state dir (used when running
standalone or if the env var is unset). Repointed all to the shared isolated
TEST_STATE_DIR from _pytest_port (temp-rooted). Also refreshed stale
~/.hermes/webui-mvp-test references in test_gateway_sync comment + ARCHITECTURE.md.
Now ZERO production-path fallbacks remain in tests.

e775fb3355 Release OV (v0.51.435): supported local pytest runner (#3908) (#4252)
* stage-3908: supported local pytest runner + symlink-guard on venv create/clear (Codex CORE fix)

Rebased rodboev/franksong2702 #3908 onto v0.51.434. Adds scripts/test.sh dev
runner + requirements-dev.txt + test_ci_hygiene.py + conftest version guard.
Defensive fix on the authoritative gate: create_or_rebuild_venv refuses a
symlinked .venv so 'python -m venv --clear' can't wipe the symlink target
(same symlink-hardening class as #4217/#4234/#4240). Locked by a hygiene test.

scripts/test.sh + requirements-dev.txt + conftest version guard + hygiene tests.
Self-rebased franksong2702's #3908 onto v0.51.434; full Codex+Opus+suite gate.
Codex CORE fix applied: refuse to create/--clear a virtualenv through a symlinked
.venv (symlink-hardening class, #4217/#4234/#4240), locked by a hygiene assertion.

Hermes Agentandnesquena-hermes 85ee6ec2c8 fix(profiles): address greptile P2 flags on #3960
- _load_models_cache_from_disk: resolve _get_models_cache_path() once
(was called twice — exists() then open()) (greptile P2).
- conftest: use a _MISSING sentinel for the _active_profile restore guard so
it restores whenever api.profiles was importable pre-test, independent of the
value (greptile P2; _active_profile defaults to 'default' so the prior
is-not-None guard was functionally fine but technically value-dependent).

Hermes Agentandnesquena-hermes 70d391c44a fix(profiles): scope /api/providers + /api/models to the active profile (#3957)
On a non-default profile, Settings → Providers timed out and the model
picker showed only the default profile's models. WebUI profile switching is
per-client/cookie-scoped (#798), but two read-only paths resolved from the
process-global default profile:

- Facet A: /api/providers + /api/models did not apply the active profile's
.env around the read, so get_auth_status() / provider_model_ids() / custom
key lookups resolved the default profile's credentials. On a non-default
profile the auth probes could stall past the 30s frontend abort.
- Facet B: the /api/models disk cache was a single import-time
STATE_DIR/models_cache.json shared across every profile, while the cache
fingerprint is profile-specific -> a non-default profile rejected the shared
snapshot every read and cold-rebuilt (the slow serial-probe path).

Fix:
- api.profiles.profile_env_for_active_request(): applies the active
per-request profile's .env for the duration of the read (delegates to the
existing profile_env_for_background_worker used by streaming). No-op for the
  default/root profile, so single-profile deployments are byte-identical.
- api.config._get_models_cache_path(): profile-keys the disk cache filename
(models_cache.<profile>.json) derived from the default path; default profile
keeps models_cache.json unchanged (no file migration).
- routes.py: wrap both GET handlers in profile_env_for_active_request.
- conftest: restore api.profiles._active_profile + clear request-profile TLS
after each test (a pre-existing isolation hole that profile-keyed cache
  paths newly surface under sharding).

Tested: 10 new regression tests; live before/after on isolated servers shows
a non-default profile now surfaces its configured provider (deepseek) with
its own credentials + its own cache file, where master showed only the
default profile's providers and one shared cache.

ba70926e51 Release v0.51.253 — Release HU (stage-r1) (#3591)
## Release v0.51.253 — Release HU (stage-r1)

Phase-1 low-risk batch — 7 PRs (no intervention beyond apply + one inline MUST-FIX).

### Fixed
| Issue/PR | Author | Fix |
|----------|--------|-----|
| #3525 | @TomBanksAU | Streaming DOM-replace "follow" window tightened 1200px→120px — a reader who scrolled up mid-stream no longer gets snapped to the bottom on completion. |
| #3556 | @ai-ag2026 | Topbar count distinguishes a partially-loaded transcript ("loaded of total" via server `message_count`); fully-loaded keeps the tool-row-filtered count. |
| #3502 follow-up | @rodboev | Sidebar messaging source badges (Telegram/Discord/…) render as chips, not just CLI ones. |
| — | @Karlineal | `.pre-header+pre` margin override scoped under `.msg-body` (removes a 10px gap above code blocks). |

### Tests
- `test_ctl_script.py` kills orphan fake-python trees on Windows; conftest `_discover_python` checks the Windows venv layout (`Scripts/python.exe`). (#3537, #3577, @rodboev)

### Docs
- Explicit WebUI–Agent compatibility policy + Docker pinning guidance. (#3232, @franksong2702)

### Dropped from this batch
- **#3538** (self-update stash-pop recovery) — the Codex regression gate found a **BRICK-class data-loss**: the recovery path runs `git reset --merge` then `git stash drop`, permanently discarding the user's local modifications while returning `ok:true` + scheduling a restart. Held with `changes-requested` + a repro and the fix (keep the stash, return `ok:false`, no restart). Concept is good; the destructive `stash drop` must go.

### Gate
- Full pytest suite: **7575 passed, 0 failed**
- ESLint: CLEAN · ruff: CLEAN · browser-smoke: CLEAN
- Codex (regression): SHIP-ONLY-WITH-FIXES (BRICK data-loss #3538 + tool-row count regression #3556) → #3538 dropped, #3556 fixed inline → **SAFE TO SHIP**

nesquena-hermes d0917f2b24 fix(#3104): correct dedup filename reporting + make zip-bomb cap testable
Two issues caught by the PR's own tests against the out-of-process test server:
1. Dedup reporting bug: after a filename collision the file was correctly
written to e.g. report-1.pdf, but the JSON response reported the ORIGINAL
   name (safe_name) — now reports dest.name. (Real user-facing bug.)
2. Zip-bomb cap was untestable: the test monkeypatched _MAX_EXTRACTED_BYTES in
the pytest process, which has no effect on the separate server process where
extraction runs. Made the cap env-configurable (HERMES_WEBUI_MAX_EXTRACTED_MB,
read at call time via _max_extracted_bytes(); defaults to 10x upload cap),
set it to 5MB in the conftest server env, and rewrote the test to upload a
compressible archive that genuinely extracts past the cap. Also asserts no
partial extraction dir is left behind.

Plus lint: unused field_name loop var -> _field_name, unused os import in test.

nesquena-hermes f9acf464e9 ci: run test suite in 3 parallel shards + make suite shard-safe
Completes the test-sharding half of #3197 (Docker-cache half shipped v0.51.177).
Adds pytest-shard 3-way split to tests.yml (3 shards x 3 Python = 9 jobs,
fail-fast: false). pytest-shard is 0-indexed so the matrix uses [0,1,2] — the
original #3197 used [1,2,3] which would have crashed the out-of-range job and
silently skipped shard 0's tests.

Made the suite shard-safe by fixing 4 cross-test state-pollution bugs that
passed sequentially but failed when sharded:
- test_onboarding_mvp: reset onboarding_completed flag (settings.json) in the
autouse fixture; the config-cleanup only cleared config.yaml/.env.
- test_issue693_system_health_panel: invalidate the process-wide password-hash
cache before/after so a prior test's "no password" cache doesn't defeat the
  auth-gate assertion.
- test_auth_session_persistence: assert against auth._SESSIONS_FILE (where auth
actually writes) instead of a local _TEST_STATE path that only matched under a
  lucky import order.
- test_profile_env_isolation (root cause of the worst leak): stop deleting +
  re-importing api.profiles under a temp HERMES_BASE_HOME — that swapped the
module object and poisoned the cached _DEFAULT_HERMES_HOME for every later
test (broke test_title_aux_routing's load_config). Now points the cached path
via monkeypatch.setattr (auto-restored, no module swap).
- conftest: autouse fixture restores HERMES_HOME/HERMES_BASE_HOME after each
test as defense-in-depth against future switch_profile leaks.

Verified: all 3 shards green (6912 passed, 0 failed); full sequential run still
green (6957 passed, 0 failed). Slowest shard ~70s vs ~180s sequential.

BonyFish ea3d4ec0b3 feat(cron): dynamic delivery options from API instead of hardcoded select
Replace the hardcoded 4-option deliver dropdown (local/discord/telegram/slack)
with a dynamic select populated from a new GET /api/crons/delivery-options
endpoint that reads _KNOWN_DELIVERY_PLATFORMS from hermes-agent.

Key changes:
- Add GET /api/crons/delivery-options endpoint returning all known platforms
- Frontend loads options asynchronously on first cron form open, with caching
- Enable deliver editing for existing jobs (was previously disabled)

Hermes Agent 20bd845416 fix(tests): permanent os.execv guard to stop pytest self-restart loop
api.updates._schedule_restart() spawns a daemon thread that calls
os.execv() after a short sleep. Tests in test_update_banner_fixes.py
monkeypatch os.execv to a no-op, but monkeypatch teardown can win the
race against the daemon thread — when the thread wakes up after
teardown, the real os.execv is back, and it re-execs pytest with the
original argv. From the outside this looked like pytest hanging at 99%
and then restarting the entire suite from 0% in a loop.

The fix shadows os.execv with a permanent no-op wrapper at conftest
module-import time, so late-firing daemon threads can't escape. Tests
that need to verify execv was called still patch it themselves; their
patches sit on top of the wrapper for their lifetime.

Also adds tests/test_pytest_execv_guard.py to pin the guard against
future conftest refactors.

nesquena-hermes d9bc8360a4 test(infra): fixture swaps real functions via monkeypatch (CI-robust)
CI on Python 3.11 still failed test_allow_outbound_network_fixture_*
because the previous module-global toggle (_ALLOW_OUTBOUND=True/False)
was unreliable on the runner — the wrapper's global lookup at call time
sometimes saw False even after the fixture's True assignment.

Switch to monkeypatch-based fixture: instead of toggling a global that
the wrapper checks, restore socket.create_connection and
socket.socket.connect to their REAL captured implementations for the
duration of the test. Pytest's monkeypatch fixture handles teardown so
the wrappers are reinstalled automatically.

Rewrote the two paired tests to check function identity
(socket.create_connection is _hermes_blocked_create_connection vs. is
_REAL_CREATE_CONNECTION) instead of attempting a live outbound to
8.8.8.8:53 — direct identity check is hermetic and doesn't depend on
whether the CI runner has any outbound network access at all.

nesquena-hermes 6d83d16016 test(infra): tighten IPv6 unique-local check + replace self-passing fixture test
Two low-severity follow-ups from Opus regrounding review:

1. The IPv6 unique-local fc00::/7 check was `h.startswith('fc') or
h.startswith('fd')` — too loose. It would also classify hostnames
like 'food.example.com' or 'fdsa.test' as 'local' and silently let
them through the block. Tightened to a regex match for canonical
IPv6 syntax (`f[cd][0-9a-f]{0,2}:`) so only actual IPv6 addresses
match. Same fix in both tests/conftest.py and server.py.

2. test_allow_outbound_network_fixture_unblocks was technically
self-passing: it tried to connect to a *.invalid hostname, which is
in the allow-list, so the real socket.create_connection would run
regardless of whether the fixture toggled the block. Replaced with
a public-IP-based test that actually proves the toggle works, plus
a paired test_block_is_active_outside_the_fixture sanity test that
proves the block is on without the fixture.

Both follow-ups noted by Opus advisor as 'defer-OK' but trivial fixes
so landing them in this batch.

nesquena-hermes a6174d08db test(infra): hermetic network isolation — block all outbound from tests
Tests should not reach the public internet. Before this commit, an
accidentally-leaking outbound socket from the test_server fixture (real
TLS handshakes to Anthropic / Amazon / OpenRouter, sometimes triggered
by SDK-init paths that found a credential the credential-strip allowlist
missed) was adding 60+s of wall-time to a 100s test run and creating a
class of flaky failures.

This installs a default-deny socket-block at two layers:

1. Pytest process, via tests/conftest.py module-level monkey-patch on
   socket.create_connection + socket.socket.connect. Loopback / RFC1918
   private / link-local / RFC2606 reserved-TLD destinations pass through;
anything else raises OSError("hermes test network isolation: outbound
to ... blocked"). Tests that legitimately need real outbound opt back
in via the new `allow_outbound_network` fixture (no current callers).

2. Test_server subprocess (server.py), via a HERMES_WEBUI_TEST_NETWORK_BLOCK=1
environment-variable-gated guard at the top of server.py. tests/conftest.py
sets the env var on every test_server spawn. Without this, the subprocess
could make outbound that the pytest-side block can't see (which is exactly
what was happening — verified via `ss -tnp` showing the server.py child
with established ESTAB sockets to [2607:6bc0::10]:443).

In production the env var is unset, so the guard is a no-op.

Companion changes:

- test_dns_resolution_failure refactored to mock socket.getaddrinfo
raising gaierror, instead of relying on a real DNS lookup of a
*.invalid hostname. The test was the one outlier that genuinely
exercised real DNS; mocking matches what every other probe-error test
in the same file already does.

- New tests/test_conftest_network_isolation.py with 9 adversarial
tests proving the block fires for public IPs (including the exact
Anthropic IPv6 and Amazon IPv4 destinations we observed leaking),
  the allow-list passes loopback / RFC1918 / link-local / reserved-TLDs,
and the opt-in fixture re-enables real outbound when needed.

Test suite: 5,120 → 5,192 (+72 net new from this commit + the regression
tests in the companion commits). Wall time: 161s → 95s on the same
hardware. No remaining outbound from any test path.

nesquena-hermes 1a2cf2812c test(conftest): block AWS IMDS probing + expand credential-strip allowlist
Two test-infrastructure fixes surfaced while running the full suite on
this branch. Both prevent accidental outbound network calls from the
pytest process — a class of bug that doesn't show up as test failures
but corrupts timing, leaks credentials, and was responsible for a recent
10× slowdown observation.

## 1. AWS_EC2_METADATA_DISABLED for the whole pytest session

When hermes-agent's bedrock_adapter / botocore credential chain is
imported during tests (e.g. via api/config.py provider-catalog imports),
botocore probes the EC2 Instance Metadata Service at 169.254.169.254
looking for an instance role. On VPS hosts where IMDS is reachable but
rate-limited (HTTP 429) or non-responsive, those probes dominate wall
time — a 161s test run was observed extending to 600+s.

Set `AWS_EC2_METADATA_DISABLED=true` at module load (before any test-file
imports trigger botocore initialisation). This is the documented AWS-
supported way to silence the probe and matches the guard the agent's own
`hermes_cli/doctor.py` already uses inside its parallel-probe block.

Also explicitly re-set the var on the spawned test-server env so it
can't be accidentally cleared by a later `env.update(...)`.

## 2. Expanded credential-strip allowlist

The original strip list covered 6 providers (OpenRouter, OpenAI,
Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Xiaomi). Several others leaked through
into the test server subprocess:

- `MEM0_API_KEY`, `XAI_API_KEY`, `MISTRAL_API_KEY`, `OLLAMA_API_KEY`,
  `GROQ_API_KEY`, `TOGETHER_API_KEY`, …
- AWS credentials (`AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID`, `AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY`,
  `AWS_SESSION_TOKEN`, `AWS_PROFILE`, `AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK`)
- Messaging bot tokens (`TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN`, `DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN`,
  `SLACK_BOT_TOKEN`, `SIGNAL_API_TOKEN`, `WHATSAPP_API_TOKEN`)
- Memory providers (`HONCHO_API_KEY`, `SUPERMEMORY_API_KEY`)
- Search / browser / image-gen (`FIRECRAWL_API_KEY`, `FAL_KEY`,
  `TAVILY_API_KEY`, `SERPER_API_KEY`, `BRAVE_API_KEY`)
- GitHub tokens (`GH_TOKEN`, `GITHUB_TOKEN`)
- Azure OpenAI (`AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY`, `AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT`)

A real outbound TLS connection to a provider's IPv6 endpoint was
observed during a test run on this host before the strip was expanded.
The test server uses a mock config and has no business making real API
calls.

## Test status

5,151 passed / 11 skipped / 1 xfailed / 2 xpassed / 0 regressions in
139s on Python 3.11. Down from 147s before the fixes (and from
intermittent 10×-slowdowns on IMDS-rate-limited hosts). All API/feature
contracts unchanged.

## Security audit of remaining test-suite host references

Every IP / URL / hostname referenced in `tests/**.py` was classified:
- Loopback (127.0.0.1, localhost, ::1, 0.0.0.0)
- RFC1918 private (10.*, 172.16-31.*, 192.168.*)
- RFC 5737 TEST-NET-3 documentation (203.0.113.*)
- RFC 2606 reserved docs domains (*.example.com, *.example.local,
  *.example.test)
- Security-attack input strings used only as parser/validator input
(evil.com, attacker, evil.example.com — never resolved or contacted)
- Real provider/CDN endpoints used only as `base_url` config strings
or CSP-allowlist assertions — never actually fetched
- 8.8.8.8 used only as a "non-loopback example" in `_is_local_from_handler()`
  unit tests

No suspicious egress destinations.

nesquena-hermes 0c26ab3425 test(conftest): strip HERMES_WEBUI_SKIP_ONBOARDING env globally; rfcs: note discussion-first for contributor RFCs
Two follow-ups from Opus pre-release review of stage-336:

1. tests/conftest.py — autouse session fixture that removes
HERMES_WEBUI_SKIP_ONBOARDING from os.environ for the whole pytest run, and
restores it after. Hosting providers and isolated harnesses set this var
to short-circuit the onboarding wizard, but it leaked into pytest and
caused tests that exercise apply_onboarding_setup() to fail with cryptic
FileNotFoundError. Tests that specifically validate the short-circuit
behavior can opt back in with monkeypatch.setenv. Surgical per-test
delenv calls remain as defense-in-depth but are now redundant.

2. docs/rfcs/README.md — one-line note that first-time contributor RFCs
should be discussed in an issue before opening a PR. Gates drive-by
design-doc PRs without us having to decline them on contribution.

Verified: 96 onboarding-related tests pass with HERMES_WEBUI_SKIP_ONBOARDING=1
exported in the test runner env (would have failed before this fixture).

ede1a5fc50 feat: composer-centric UI refresh + Hermes Control Center (v0.50.0, closes #242)
* Polish workspace panel behavior and app dialogs

* Replace remaining emoji UI glyphs with Lucide icons

* Redesign composer footer around model and context controls

Move the model selector into the composer footer, replace the linear context pill with a compact circular badge plus tooltip, and remove the redundant topbar model pill.

Design credit and inspiration: Theo / T3 Code.
Reference implementation: https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/

* Remove obsolete activity bar

Drop the old activity bar, keep turn-scoped state in the composer footer, and route remaining non-chat status messages through toasts.

This leaves live tool cards and the message timeline as the primary progress UI, with the composer owning stop/cancel and brief turn status.

* Move workspace and model switching into composer footer

* Move profile switching into composer footer

* Refactor Hermes control center UI

* Redesign control center settings modal layout

Widen the modal to 860px, simplify the tab list to icon+label rows,
stretch the tab column's divider to full height, lock the panel to a
fixed height so switching tabs no longer resizes the outer shell, and
always open on the Conversation tab.

* Put session item actions in a dropdown

* Use Hermes mark in sidebar control button

* Reset control center section on close

* Drop session-item left border indicator

Remove the left-border accent used for active, CLI, and project rows —
each state already has a dedicated cue (gold fill, cli badge, project
dot), so the border was redundant. Fully round the row, add 2px
bottom spacing between rows, and strip the matching JS/CSS overrides.

* Increase session search input vertical padding

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Normalise odd pixel values across UI

Snap padding, gap, and border-radius values to the 2/4/6/8/10/12 grid
across composer chips, sidebar panels, cron list, settings, approval
buttons, dropdowns, and inline message edit — eliminating the 7/9/11px
drift that was making sibling elements feel subtly misaligned.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Add missing #btnMobileFiles button and .mobile-files-btn CSS (for mobile QA suite)

The mobile layout regression suite (test_mobile_layout.py) requires:
- #btnMobileFiles onclick=toggleMobileFiles() in topbar chips
- .mobile-files-btn CSS rules for responsive show/hide at 640/900px breakpoints

Also adds max-width guard to .profile-dropdown to prevent clipping at narrow viewports.

* Improve composer footer mobile responsiveness and UX

- Collapse composer chips to icon-only at <=400px viewports
- Add model chip icon (CPU) so it remains tappable when labels are hidden
- Show send button always (disabled state when empty, hidden during streaming)
- Show context usage indicator on session load, not just after streaming
- Add cancel status fallback timeout to prevent stale "Cancelling..." text
- Update tests to match new send button and busy state behavior

* Fix duplicate files button and broken workspace close on mobile

Remove redundant #btnMobileFiles button that duplicated #btnWorkspacePanelToggle
in the mobile topbar. Fix workspace panel close button calling undefined
closeMobileFiles() — now calls closeWorkspacePanel().

* Fix model chip icon vertical alignment in composer footer

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix workspace toggle button hidden on desktop by conflicting CSS class

Remove mobile-files-btn class from #btnWorkspacePanelToggle — its
display:none!important rule was overriding workspace-toggle-btn visibility
on non-mobile viewports.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix session actions dots button inaccessible on mobile sidebar

Always show the session actions trigger on mobile (no hover state on
touch devices) and restore right padding so text truncates with
ellipsis before the dots icon.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix composer footer manage links not opening sidebar panel

The "Manage profiles" and "Manage workspaces" links in the composer
footer dropdowns called switchPanel() which only changes the active
panel content but doesn't open the sidebar. Replaced with
mobileSwitchPanel() which also opens the sidebar so the panel is
actually visible.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Widen icon-only composer chips breakpoint from 400px to 768px

Move the icon-only chip styling up into the existing max-width:768px
media query so chips collapse to icon-only on tablets too, preventing
composer footer overflow on mid-size screens.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Fix composer-left vertical scrollbar by setting overflow-y:hidden

When overflow-x is set to auto, the CSS spec implicitly changes
overflow-y from visible to auto, allowing a vertical scrollbar to
appear from slight chip padding/border overflow. Explicitly set
overflow-y:hidden to prevent this.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix: resolve rebase conflicts and fix control center test assertions

- Resolved 4 conflicts during rebase onto master (workspace.js,
  boot.js, index.html, test_sprint34.py)
- Fixed test_sprint34.py: _controlSection -> _settingsSection,
  cc-tab -> settings-tabs (matching actual implementation)
- Fixed quoting syntax error in test assertion

711bb5a6c9 feat: real-time gateway session sync (Phase 1) (#274)
* feat: add real-time gateway session sync (Phase 1)

- Add gateway_watcher.py: background daemon polling state.db every 5s
for gateway session changes (telegram, discord, slack, etc.)
- Extend get_cli_sessions() to include all non-webui sources
- Add SSE endpoint /api/sessions/gateway/stream for real-time push
- Add dynamic source badges (telegram=blue, discord=purple, slack=dark purple)
- Rename 'Show CLI sessions' to 'Show agent sessions'
- Wire watcher lifecycle into server start/stop
- 10 tests covering metadata, filtering, SSE, and watcher lifecycle
- Activated via the same checkbox as CLI session import

Addresses GitHub issue #272

* fix: SSE event name mismatch, TLS attribute, remove PLAN.md

- Fix critical SSE bug: frontend listened for 'gateway_session_update'
but backend sends 'sessions_changed' -- events were silently dropped
- Fix frontend field check: data.changed -> data.sessions (matches
the actual payload structure from gateway_watcher)
- Fix TLS: ssl.TLSv1_2 -> ssl.TLSVersion.TLSv1_2 (the bare attribute
does not exist, would crash TLS setup and silently fall back to HTTP)
- Remove PLAN.md: implementation plan should not be committed to repo

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix: test isolation and slow-consumer sentinel in gateway sync

tests/test_gateway_sync.py:
- Fix _get_test_state_dir() path mismatch: the function was computing
  HERMES_HOME/webui-mvp-test but conftest.py sets HERMES_HOME=TEST_STATE_DIR,
so state.db was written to a double-nested path the server never read.
Now uses HERMES_WEBUI_STATE_DIR first (which conftest sets directly to
TEST_STATE_DIR), fixing the 7/10 test failures in full-suite ordering.
- Fix conn cleanup: removed conn.close() from inside try blocks so the
connection stays valid for _remove_test_sessions() in the finally block.
Previously the closed conn caused ProgrammingError in finally (swallowed
by bare except), leaving ghost sessions in state.db on test failure.

api/gateway_watcher.py:
- Fix slow-consumer queue eviction: when a subscriber queue fills (>10 events)
and is removed from _subscribers, now puts a None sentinel into it so the
SSE handler unblocks and closes the connection, letting EventSource
auto-reconnect. Without this the connection stayed open but received no
  further events.

* fix: test isolation — set HERMES_WEBUI_TEST_STATE_DIR in conftest

The gateway sync tests write directly to state.db and must use the same
path the test server reads from. Previously they computed the path
independently, which broke when test_auth_sessions.py set a different
HERMES_WEBUI_STATE_DIR in the test-process environment at import time.

tests/conftest.py:
- Set HERMES_WEBUI_TEST_STATE_DIR=TEST_STATE_DIR in the test process's
os.environ (via setdefault) so gateway tests can read it reliably.
Using setdefault preserves any explicit override the caller may pass.

tests/test_gateway_sync.py:
- Simplify _get_test_state_dir(): check HERMES_WEBUI_TEST_STATE_DIR first
(now reliably set by conftest), fall back to HERMES_HOME/webui-mvp-test.
Remove the workaround that tried to snapshot HERMES_HOME at import time.

Result: 658/658 tests pass in full-suite ordering (was 651 pass / 7 fail).

* fix: wire auto_install_agent_deps into server.py startup; add api/startup.py to ARCHITECTURE.md

* fix(tests): kill stale process on test port before server start in conftest

Stale servers left by QA harness runs (ports 8792/8793 etc.) or prior
test sessions could interfere with conftest starting its own server on
TEST_PORT (8788). If the port was already occupied, _wait_for_server
hit the wrong server and tests got unexpected 404s/500s, failing
non-deterministically — the 'conftest isolation issue' seen this session.

Fix: run fuser -k on TEST_PORT before launching the new server process,
with a 0.5s sleep for port release. The full suite now runs 571/571
reliably regardless of what other servers were previously active.

When running tests without hermes-agent, 24 tests that depend on cron,

Detection: conftest.py checks if the agent dir exists and if cron.jobs
and tools.skills_tool are importable. When not available, an explicit

Result:
- Without agent: 400 passed, 24 skipped, 0 failed
